Temple Road

A detached period residence set on a generous site, the gardens were originally designed by Helen Dillon but had become over grown and no longer suited to contemporary family life.

The red brick house, which had been extended incrementally over time, featured asymmetrical wings to either side. The landscape design seeks to reassert and celebrate the original symmetry of the main house, re centring it within the site and restoring a sense of balance and formality.

Facing south, the garden has been carefully structured to provide a series of patio spaces to both the front and rear, while creating a richly planted, intimate landscape – a private oasis within the city.

Patios are paved in granite, reflecting the local stone character, with discreet yet generous parking areas formed in pea gravel and resin bound macadam.

Beyond the formal terraces, a variety of seating spaces are distributed throughout the garden. These include a gazebo in the front garden set within a formal framework, a seat at the far end of the rear garden with views back towards the house and pond, and a shepherd’s hut with adjacent firepit nestled into relaxed, prairie style planting.

The former vegetable garden has been reimagined, with the original glasshouse rescued from dense overgrowth and reinstated as a functional focal point. Bespoke storage for timber and bicycles has been seamlessly integrated into this productive garden area.

The planting style changes to reflect the character of the different spaces, whether that be formal, wild or woodland, providing colour and interest throughout the year.
